About Cressy Cane
From 2014 to 2023, Cressy Cane has been held annually over three days (usually every October), on the Banks of Brumbys Creek in Tasmania, at “Hayes on Brumbys”.
From 2023 onwards, Cressy Cane is planned to be held bi-Annually, on odd years (the next Cressy Cane is planned for 2025). It's sister event in New Zealand, "Kiwi Cane" will run from 2024, bi-Annually, on even years.
Founded by “Bamboo” Dave Hemmings, who wanted to share his own love of bamboo with others, Cressy Cane is a celebration of making and fishing bamboo rods. Makers of all levels of experience, those wanting to begin rodmaking, and even those just passionate or interested in bamboo are welcome. Topics include all aspects of rodmaking, casting and fishing bamboo, and important related subjects such as local (and world award winning) whisky and gin!
For those travelling to Cressy Cane, Tasmania offers World Class fly fishing. “Hayes on Brumbies” is situated on the iconic “Brumbys Creek” tailwater. In addition to the main creek, a private anabranch section of spring creek is also available to fish for attendees. Even the Casting Pool contains large educated trout as a distraction to the casting! Close by are a range of streams and rivers, and Tasmania’s shallow, natural lakes, which are world renowned for sight fishing to large trout.
The venue host, Peter Hayes, is one of the world’s leading fly casting instructors, and a highly decorated competition caster and angler at national and international levels. Peter is Australia’s first IFFF Master Casting Instructor (MCI), and is on the IFFF Casting Board of Governors. As well as sharing a love of bamboo and being a rodmaker himself, Peter is on hand at Cressy Cane to help attendees get the most out of their rods in their own fishing and casting.
